This will be an eight week course held here in my home in Bowie, MD. There is now another section in Gaithersburg, MD that will be held on Thursdays from 10am-12noon that will also accommodate up to 20 students. This Shakespeare Class is geared for students in grades 5-12 but younger students may be able to keep up. The class size will cap at 20. We will be reading the play out of class and discussing it in class. We will be watching at one video versions of the play and discussing the various aspects of producing a Shakespeare play on stage vs. in Hollywood. I will be giving assignments that will add to your child's learning. There will be a Tee Shirt design contest. On the last regular class day we will be having oral recitations by each child.

This is a cooperative educational experience. As such I would like to know what types of help you are willing to offer:

Car Pooling
Assistant Teacher
Student Helper
Picnic Coordinator

You will need to buy one copy of the Shakespeare play. I will recommend a particular publisher but this isn't mandatory.  Here is a link to the free online version of Twelfth Night. Here is a link to download the the whole play already set into an Adobe PDF document (this may take a while to download and is non-editable). Each child needs a copy (book or computer printout) for class time use. Do you agree to obtain a copy for use in the class?

YES
NO

I will need to charge a one time cost of $80. This will cover the cost of Xeroxing and the T-shirt that each child will receive at the end of the class. (The design will be chosen by the students from their own contest). Are you willing to pay this cost? The second and subsequent children in a family need to pay only $70 per child to cover the coast of the T-shirt. Some scholarships are available at the discretion of the instructor - email her HERE if you are interested in inquiring about a scholarship.

NO

What size T-shirt will your child require?

If other members of your family would like to purchase T-shirts please tell me how many and the sizes. The cost will be $15 per T-Shirt. I will request payment as soon as you order the extra T-shirt(s).

The grand finale for the course will include the class and as many friends and family members attending the Shakespeare Theatre's Free For All performance at Sidney Harman Hall, in DC, across from the Verizon Center. The performance dates will be posted soon and will fall between September 2 and 24, 2010. I will be talking to students and parents about the best day to apply for our set of FREE tickets for the fall performance. I have been to this theatre and it is a wonderful place and will provide the kids with a very good theatre experience.

The play for this year will be the comedy "Twelfth Night".  You must be aware of the content of the play and understand that content before enrolling your child. You may choose to go online and read an  Overview of Taming of the Shrew written by brother and sister team of Charles and Mary Lamb that is on this website. Please check YES below if you understand the play's content and are allowing your child to study it. I will in no way teach details that are bawdy or sexual, but I must occasionally refer to sensitive issues. Shakespeare was known to have a bawdy sense of humor and his plays often have amorous undercurrents. While I do not intend to dwell on these topics, you must understand that they are there. You may need to discuss these issues with your child as he/she/they go through the play.
