World Regional Geography - Initial Information Sign up HERE

Description: The course will take a full year, divided into two semesters. The course will walk the students around the approximately 200 nations of the world using a regional approach and heavily relying on the Five Themes of Geography (Location, Place, Human Environment & Interaction, Movement and Region). Each class will use current events to tie into the region being studied and the cement the information into the memory of the student. 2-4 weeks will be spent on each continent/region.

Expectations: Each student is expected to prepare for each class, arrive promptly, and treat the tutor and fellow students with the utmost of respect.  Note taking is expected and will be rewarded by a far higher score than those who do not take careful notes. A project will be completed each semester: an individual project to finalize the fall semester and an individual or small group project to finalize the course. The work for the course will involve approximately 5 hours a week outside of class. This does not include research for projects. The homework will include reading in the main text, coloring in the secondary text, reading short portions in the historical book(s), reading current events and writing up short essays on them, and taking occasional  quizzes in class and take-home tests.

Materials: Each student will be required to have the following books: a loose leaf notebook with sections, writing tools, and have access to a computer and the Internet. I rely heavily on email communication and expect my students to have access to the internet for research. I will also be asking them to complete at least one assignment that needs a spreadsheet. This can be Microsoft Excel or the equivalent.

Instructor Bio: Short Bio: Mrs. Schaeffer’s college studies (ASN, RN, BS) led her into nursing, with her emphasis on epidemiology and disease control. She and her husband Steve (& one son) served as missionaries in Papua New Guinea from 1989-1993. After returning to the USA Mrs. Schaeffer specialized in hospice nursing and home educating her three sons. Due to a long history of globe trotting with her diplomat parents and her own travels as a missionary in Oceania, her natural interest in geography led to an intense study of grade school and then high school & college geography. She has used many of the materials that have come along in recent years to help her develop her unique way of teaching World Regional Geography. Class Description
You know when you've read a good story. Good stories touch your heart, stir your mind and move your emotions. Good stories leave you in a better place than before you started reading. And good stories echo important truths that resound within you over and over again. John Jenkins, published novelist and award-winning contributor to Focus on the Family magazines for teens, is teaching this unique writing class that combines professional fiction writing skills with the study of classic literature (short stories, not novels!) – the authors, their themes, their times. Genuine skills for academic excellence – and beyond!

 What You Will Learn
In this accelerated AP-style class students will learn how to: 1) read, interpret, and understand literature, 2) understand the impact of the author’s worldview and historical context on their stories, 3) how to plan, write, and rewrite short stories using elements that include: setting, plot, characterization, tone/mood, genre, and theme, and optionally, learn how to format and edit a story for publication.

 Requirements

1. Throughout the year, students will develop and maintain a class notebook containing all of the school years research, in-class and homework assignments (in-progress and completed) and handouts. A key component of the notebook is an assignment grade master sheet. Students are required to keep a record of all assignments (assignment name, due date, grade). Failure to maintain a class notebook can result in suspension from class until the notebook is updated.

2. Students will read 8-12 short stories or excerpts from novels and write 8-10 vignettes/short stories ranging from 600-1800 words in the style and genre of the author, with one required rewrite and a second optional rewrite. Students will have a minimum of two or three weeks to complete an assignment, and a minimum of one week to turn in the required rewrite. Students will also complete 8-12 in-class or take home writing exercises due the following week. Failure to turn in an assignment on time can result in the lowering of the student’s grade of grade level per week.

3. There are no make-up classes for missed days. Students must initiate communication with the teacher or a classmate to find out the week’s assignments if the class homework guide does not already state the assignment. As long as a student completes an assignment on time and according to the assignment’s requirements, there are no penalties.

 Parent’s Involvement
At a minimum, parents are required to monitor: 1) a student’s research, planning and paper writing schedule, 2) the student’s maintenance of their class notebook, 3) the student’s in-progress assignment/grading master sheet, and 4) sign and return a copy of the sheet on the registration form. (click here for an Adobe PDF Registration & Information Form that you will fill out and sign and return by regular mail) - to Schaeffer Home School Cooperative, 11903 Bracken Court, Bowie, MD 20720
